There is no doubt that the Olympics are a worldwide phenomenon that captivates audiences every two years. Recently, London hosted the 2012 Summer Games and Sochi is set to host the 2014 Winter games. The following articles outline a few interesting points about how technology was a major part of the Olympics in London. What are some other aspects of the games that technology effected? Was it a positive or negative effect? If you could stir a technology revolution at the Olympics, what would be your targeted area?

I think the technology we have today that allowed the entire world to watch the olympics is amazing. If London had that much technology, there will only be more to come in Sochi. I think technology affects who watches the games as well as the players. If a network decides to follow one particular athlete, that person is going to get a lot of media coverage and a lot of money for that. The viewers are pulled in to whatever this networks choose to show us. I think there is a positive effect and a negative effect that technology brings to the table. Technology allows the world to enjoy the olympics, but it can also slant someone's view of an athlete by how much coverage they get. The olympics would be a lot less biased if they could somehow show every single athlete perform.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the biggest effects that technology had on the games was the way that viewers were connected. I downloaded the NBC app, but was not impressed for many of the same reasons that were said in the article. I tried to use it for the first couple of days, and to try to watch events that are just usually not shown. It was a major failure and I just stuck to going to the website for live updates rather than trying to watch. There was also the massive spoiler from NBC about the winner of the gold medal for a swim event being on the Today, as a commercial right before her swim event. This had many people upset and questioning if time delay was a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI think generally the connection was good, and I think a lot was learned from the London games. It will be interesting to see what the networks do with the Sochi games in 2014. If there was any kind of technological revolution I would like to bring to the games it would probably be to have more connection with the athletes through social media. Some of the bigger named athletes were able to be found on Facebook or Twitter but I would like to see more connection between spectator and athlete. I think it also would have been good to have live Twitter feeds from viewers watching the event, like networks seem to do for almost every other show on TV.
I didn't know about the swimmer and the commercial.. technology can be negative to.
DeleteI feel like technology has had an effect in almost every Olympic sport. Some good and some bad. I think where it is used to more precisely pick a winner such as photo finishes or replays or the athelete wearing a sensor. But I think it negatively effects some sports. Like in the article that it talked about the air pistols now using a laser instead of an actual pellet. It may be more convenient and cost effective but I feel like that tarnishes the history of the sport. If I could stir a technology revolution I had thought it would be cool to put a sensor on all the bikes in the cycling competitions to monitor speed and acceleration and things like that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, the technology helps the sport positively and negatively. And the use of cameras really helps change the events.
DeleteWith today's technology working along side with the Olympics, its allowed just about everyone who has access to watch/view the different sports involved. Those few articles were basically about all the technology and what it had accomplished in 2012 in London just imagine what we as consumers will receive due to technology. Not only the viewing aspect of the Olympics but the timing and scoring were an accomplishment with those big score boards and timers, and how the data was transported electronically for viewer and data. Technology has also affected the athletes; it made some a world name and some not a good name. In some cases technology affects the athletes as maybe Hollywood would affect actors/performers. It could be either negative or positive, i guess it just depends on what you get with that much outstanding attention. If i could stir a technology revolution at the Olympics, what would my targeted area be? That is a tough question, personally ive never really watched most of the Olympics at any time, ive seen bits and peices but never actually watched it. But i do agree with Emilie to try and somehow show every athlete perform, or even limit every athlete with the same screening time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your view on this
DeleteNow you can watch the games on TV and get a very good view of everything going on, although it would be cool to go to the olympics I feel like you wouldn't be able to see, I would rather watch on TV. This is a good way to follow one of your favorite competers. Along with the internet you can probably search their name or go to the official sight and watch them compete. The positive of the new technology in the games is that you can capture almost any move or trick on camera or video with all the cameras around the space used, there is probably one at every angle. A negative is if this person messes up bad, its going to be out in the social media for everyone to watch over and over again, and they your going to be the person that fell or scratched. Also with pictures and videos you can watch over and over again and critic every little thing instead of just the overall performance. I would make a revolution of having an app where you can pick your top few favorite people and be able to watch them on every event.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you
DeleteAfter reading these articles I was shocked at how many hours they are filming this. This allows everybody across the world with access to watch the Olympics. The technology made it possible so no athlete was cheated of how hard they have worked to compete. They have every angle (360) capturing every event. Technology has affected many areas of the Olympics. First I think the technology has made it safer against organizations trying to possibly target the big event. I think it is a positive effect. With all the technology, more people can compete with prosthetic limbs, it is a safer environment, and no athletes are being cheated.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on this.
DeleteI was shocked to. However like Tina said not every player gets screen time.
DeleteI feel that the technology that is used in the Olympics is revolutionary. Like the use of photo finishes and the fact that its electronic senors that times the race instead of people guessing who finished first or hand timing. Little things like this really changed how we view the Olympics and many other sports. Also the fact that these Athletes are on the other side of the world and we get to view them perform minute by minute, second by second is amazing. The Olympics have come a long ways from where it started and I believe that is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statements
DeleteTechnology has had a major on the Olympics. One major way is the how technology has allowed basically the world to view Olympics. Also , the Olympics being able to now be viewed on your phone. I think it is positive because , the Olympics deal with so many different countries so that fact everyone can is great. Im not sure what I would I do technology wise at the Olympics , that would be something I have to think of.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jordan on this one. Technology has made it easy for everyone to view the Olympics and keep up with it minute by minute as its going on. I think its great how technology has helped with the Olympics. Its a series of events that many different countries participate in and its also viewable by the whole world to watch. If I could add something I guess I would have some type of device that is on each major competitor to track their rate. (heart rate, speed, ect) so that way people could compare whenever they are working out.
