What are you searching?

As a society we are somewhat obsessed with searching the internet for information about any topic under the sun.  Personally as soon as I am questioning something I turn to Google or Yahoo for the answer.  Things such as song lyrics, mathematical conversions, weather, the relationship status of a celeb, etc.  The options are endless.  What are three things you regularly search on the internet? Read the following articles from 2012.  How many of the Top 10 have you searched over the past few years?  Which of the Top 10 interests you the most and why?  Which is the least likely for you to search?  What is one thing your regularly search? How do you think our instant searching habits are changing society?  Do you think the constant and virtually instant access to information allowed by technology is a good or bad thing? Why?

  1. Three things I regularly search are the weather, road conditions and search for new music. Out of the 10 articles I have searched for 7 of them. Of the top ten the Olympics interested me most because I was constantly looking at the standings in each event or at the countries medal counts. The least likely for me to search would be Whitney Houston because I don't enjoy any of her music. The thing I regularly search is the weather because I always like to know what is coming so I can make plans accordingly. I think our instant searching habbits have changed society by making information more readily available. Instead of questioning something you can just go online and find the right answer instantaneously. I think it is a good thing to always have information at your fingertips it makes it less likely that you will do something wrong or make a mistake when you can just constantly look online.

  2. Im pretty sure I haven't researched any of the top ten. I dont use the internet a whole lot. and when I do its usually for school work. I think Jeremy Lin interests me most because he was only a hot topic for a while, then wasnt too big of a deal after that. Im least likely to search about Diablo 3, mainly because I dont even know what it is, and if id did search it, it would be out of curiosity. One thing i do regularly search is water flows, so I can find out how high rivers are running and if they are fishable.Id say our searching habits are changing society. i think that when you want to know something you go look it up and find the answers right away instead of looking maybe unsuccessfully right away. I think it can be both, ex. if i want to learn how to eat healthy or learn how to do something good i can find what i need to know right away, but i can also go look up how to make a pipe bomb and i could probably get the answers right away... which i will refrain from doing.

  3. Some things I regularly search are trivial media questions that I need to know the answer to or else it will bug me forever. I often look up lyrics to songs, the name of an actor from a movie I've seen recently, and I use google image if I need to see something before I draw or color it. From the first article about the top 10 most searched topics, I remember looking up information about Whitney Houston and the 2012 election. The most interesting for me is the election because that's something that was really important at the time. The topic I would least likely want to learn about on the internet is the iPad 3 or Diablo 3. Something I can admit to regularly searching on Google is song lyrics. Our instant searching habits are definitely becoming more accessible with the google search right at the top of Safari on the iPhone. It literally takes me 3 seconds to access google, where as before I had to load it on my computer. Our society is becoming more used to using search engines instead of dictionaries and encyclopedias. I think getting closer to technology is a good thing because when it comes down to it we're learning something every time we hit the search button. Some people may get a little too carried away with the ability to put virtually anything on the internet so we still need to be careful with what we are reading.

  4. What are three things that i regularly search for? They would have to be; Concerts near ND, song lyrics/videos, and correct spellings of words. From the Washington site for the top 10 us searches i believe i've only searchd for two, which were, the hunger games and kony 2012. I don't really think that anything on the list for the top 10 interests me because they're all kind of boring to me. for instance the diablo would be the least likely i would search for, no thank you i will leave that for someone else to google or yahoo or even bing. I usually check tour dates or weather or even what some celebrities are up to and where they're at today. Instant searching habits have changed our society so much, especially with our generation, we just look up everything and anything on the internet. Some kids of the next generation are kinda " slow" at goggling. which i think is weird because a good majority are tech friendly and figure almost everything out. its a good and bad thing i guess it mostly depends on where you sit on the technology or old fashioned. i think technology has given us some great opportunities and able to spread our ideas and creativity. personally i think it was a good thing, i say this because it saves us so much more time then going searching in a dictionary or any other books. and you can get access to information on the internet that you may not a book or newspaper. I believe it has helped us a lot but also it has slowed some of us down a bit.

  5. There are a few things that I go to the internet for daily. Those things are pretty common things like my social medias, what the weather is like that day, and my WSC campus online.

On the top 10 things searched last year I do not remember looking up most of them but there are a few I would look up or that I find interesting like: Kim Kardasian, Gangnam style, and Amanda Todd. Otherwise most of those are typically not things I normally google. The reason I would have googled Kim, Gangnam or Amanda is because it is more stuff that me and my friends talk about, and stuff that is more interesting to me. Yes, it is not as important as elections, or hurricanes but I find it more interesting than most things. I would least likely find myself searching google about the election because I do not know anything about politics or what that is all about. I would search things more along the lines of social media. One thing I do find myself searching are just definitions and questions to things I need to know for a class or assignment.

The way we use internet is definitely becoming more relavent to people. If you want to know an answer you do not need to go to the library or get out a book and read a bunch of stuff to just find out what you are looking for. You can simply type the answer in your computer or phone and it pops right up. This makes it so easy to learn without going through a hassle. I think how easy it is for us to get answers is an awesome thing! We can pretty much get any answer we need at a push of the button, ya we might get false information but there are going to be 1000 of other sites to go look at.

  6. The internet has became so accessible that almost anyone can use or access it. The top ten most searched things on Google were not surprising. The number one was Whitney Houston after she accidentally drowned before preformed. I remember getting on my phone and googling this when it happened. This topic interest me the most because just like myself, I couldn't believe that this was true when I heard it, and obviously everyone else couldn't either. That or they were just intrigued to know the full story. Over the list of the top ten searches, I have searched many of the same things. However, I probably would never search Jeremy Lin. I've never heard his name til today... I did just Google him tho to find out who he was. I regularly search the internet for song lyrics, or directions. I have to admit that I am so quick to jump on my phone and run to Google whenever I have a question about anything. Whether its what to get someone for a gift or the best dog food. Instant searches are changing the society today and have been for years now. The society is becoming more advanced every day with technology. Although, the society is also putting a box on our brains. Instead of learning or figuring out for ourselves we instead just 'ask google'. Don't get me wrong though, I think the internet is very convenient for everyone.

  7. I would regularly search sports articles, trending topics, and or unusual facts. I believe out of all the top 10 I searched the topic of Morgan Freeman passing when he actually did not and the 2012 Election. The search on Amanda Todd was one search that interests me because it was an unfortunate event and I did not know many were that concerned. Also I was interested in the Whitney Houston search because it informed me on the way that she passed which I did not know. The topic that I would Least likely search would be probably Diablo 3 I'm not sure if I'm all that interested in purchasing and playing a online computer game that is that time consuming. One topic that I regularly search would be the latest electronics and what their features are. Instant searching habits are changing society because we no longer have the use for a encyclopedia, or an almanac we as a whole are now becoming more dependent on the internet for information than the use of a textbook. I believe that the constant use of the internet is a good thing. The internet can be considered a resource in some ways like if you were to be doing a research project on peanut butter. On Google there are over 80 million hits on peanut butter; hence, the internet is a great source for information. The only downfall of the internet and its information is that you have to know if the source you're getting your information from is a credible source. Anybody can post information to the internet.

  8. three things i regularly search on the internet are basketball players, videos on worldstarhiphop.com and all the latest music on hotnewhiphop.com. out of the top 10 most searched list i have searched two over the past few years. The topic that interests me the most on the list would have to be jeramy Lin. His story of how he made it big in the NBA is so motivating to me, mostly because basketball is a huge part of my life and i know how hard it can be to become successful. the least likely thing that i would search would be Amanda Todd because i have no idea who she is. One thing i regularly search is anything that has to do with basketball. i think our internet searching is changing society because you have any information you need at your fingertips and it can be accessed at at push of a button. i think that having access to information is a very good thing because i would rather know information rather then be left out in the dark about things that are going on in the world.

  9. Three things I regularly are new music , basketball players , and types of clothes. I have searched some things that have made the top 10. One being Jeremy Lin , being from New York city and a Knicks I was obviously intrigued by the Lin story. Another one was Hurricane Sandy as it took place in new York were I live , so I directly seen it affect people and neighborhoods. Probably least likely to search Lindsay lohan , she doesn't interest me. Searching has changed as people are quick to search anything and can access the internet wherever and whenever they want.

  10. Usually the things I search relate in some way to homework, or possibly something for my job. I'm constantly searching for design ideas for pages on the website, or to help breakdown a piece of code for a page. I also search things like information about a video game, movie, or book.

I think that the access to instant search and answers has really changed our society because we demand information now at such a fast pace and with immediate response. On my phone I hold the answer to almost any question whether it is right or wrong. There are also a lot of people that have come to think that what you see on the internet can just be taken at face value and doesn't need to be checked. Because we just blindly accept the information we find I think we are becoming lazy in trying to figure out what is true and what is not.
