Marketing Mania - The Superbowl Edition

It is no secret that many viewers of the Superbowl are more excited for the commercials than the actual game.  Many go as far as to DVR the event and fast forward the game!  Here is one websites list of the best and the worst ads.

Do you agree with their selections?
How does the marketing done during this event effect the game?
How does it affect the consumers?
Is there anything that you suddenly want or crave during these commercials?
How has technology changed the marketing plan of these businesses?
What are some other ways that advancements in technology has shifted how companies market their products?

  1. I do agree with most of their selections, with the exception of the "Perfect Match" commercial. I don't think it was hard to watch other than the fact that it was more awkward than anything else. I don't agree with it being one of the worst commercials because the next day everyone was talking about that because it was so weird. Personally I think it is a great ad at getting buzz, which is something Go Daddy excels at year after year.

Marketing during this event really effects the game because some people will stay to watch a bad game for good commercials. Even if the game is terrible people will still stay and watch and that means every commercial is going to get viewers and the ratings of the game will stay strong. This affects consumers because as they are watching they might think not actively think about what they are seeing in the commercial as far as the product, but they will remember it the next day whether it was good or bad when they are talking about it. It might either sway to buy or not buy the product or service. A Super Bowl ad can make or break a company.

There really isn't anything that I suddenly want or crave during the commercials. I never really see anything that just jumps out at me and that I have to have. Mostly because what you see are expensive vehicles, chips and beer, or services that I will probably never use.

Technology has really changed the marketing plan because partly now with better technology commercials are able to use computer graphics and better animation to sell their products, making things look more realistic and sometimes over the top (the whisper fight). They don't have to worry anymore about using stop motion animation and puppets.

Another shift is the amount of technology companies that are advertising to consumers during the Super Bowl. It used to be that the latest technology devices were "geeky", but now everyone wants an iPad or iPhone. Apple did a very simple commercial for the iPad this last Super Bowl that nobody remembers, but everyone knows the product. Samsung also have a huge TV spot with Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan to advertise their new Galaxy phones. I think more and more technology companies will use the Super Bowl to advertise their products as the years go on.

  2. I think the selections made from these two sights are pretty good. The worst ones are pretty bad, and the good ones made me smile. There is a lot of money at stake when making a commercial that will air during the superbowl so it has to be just right. There are some people that are not football watchers but these funny and touching ads bring in a new type of market. So there is then more people watching the game. The commercials have made the superbowl a much bigger deal in my opinion. I know that I would definitely not be watching if there wasn't commercials or superbowl parties.
Commercials dont make a big impact on me other than making me laugh or cry, so I cant say that any of these made me suddenly want what was being advertised. Technology has changed the marketing plan for some of these businesses maybe because if they are making a few commercials a year, they dont spend there money on it and just wait and make a really good one during the superbowl. I also think that companies are getting a little more technically with there commercials and trying to make them as modern as they can. This is not always good because the commercial about the farming truck that was not technical at all and it was very touching. Maybe commercials makers need to make it touch close to home more, make it more of a personal thing?

  3. For the most part I agree with their selections, I might rearrange them a little but overall I thought they were pretty close. The marketing done during this game blows it up even more than it already has. It adds even more viewers because people want to see the next funny or crazy commercial. I don't feel like watching these commercials makes me suddenly want anything. It doesn't make me leap off of my couch and hurry to the store to make sure I have that product. But say the doritos commercial maybe ill remember that and next time im at the store ill pick up some doritos. Technology has greatly changed the marketing plan for these businesses. These days it is pretty uncommon to not have at least 1 TV in their home. Because of this more and more people are watching the superbowl or not even watching it and waiting until after the game and youtubing all of the commercials. Technology is also being integrated into the commercials. I believe it was the 2012 superbowl where a company showed a commercial and to view the rest of the commercial you had to go online and visit their website.

  4. Do I agree with the worst and best superbowl commercials of last year? Yes I do. I agree with the selections because the ones on the best list were great, they were funny, they caught the consumers attention, and they also made sure to pick the tag lines to jump out to the consumers. How does the marketing done during this event effect the game? I think the marketing effects the game by views, in one of the websites it states that even some just turn into the biggest football game of the season just to watch the commercials. but also some may agitate the views, because of the interest and having to wait the extra 5 minutes or something. The consumers are affected by more products out there and maybe if one the commercials is a food product like the Doritos; some people will have cravings or if its a mercades commercial they may want to break down and get one; Or even their perception may have been deceived by a product that didn't "work" as it was advertised. Technology has greatly changed the marketing plan hugely. Some the of technology that is used to create the commercials are beyond some of our imagination, especially the graphic effects that are common in today's world. It has also affected by the internet, because you can go look up all the commercials after the big game and find them all and re-watch and even share on any social media website. Companies have shifted in technology by advancement of product use and branding. Companies use technology to reach all consumers not on just TV but by the use of the internet share their adds almost everywhere; or even your phone you have an app to a certain company and you may get a "special" text message from that company. Our generation has evolved and grew so much since the first superbowl. We can watch the game, we can hear the game, we can read the game.

  5. I love of Superbowl commercials. its a time when powerhouse companies such as Budweiser, Doritos, and many car companies compete for the most entertaining commercial. I think it makes people pay less attention to the game, because I know when Im watching it, and see a commercial break coming up Ill stay for it just to see what ideas they have come up with. Technology has created more possibilities for people whos jobs it is to come up with commercial ideas, which is getting more difficult resulting in the terrible campaigns we see regularly, but technology could give them the chance to do something different with things such as computer generation, making it possible to create something, that someone 10 years ago couldn't have had the opportunity to make. Companies have come up with countless ways to market. With more technology and more ways to propagate what your selling technology has to fall into place with ads on your apps you use, ads in between songs you hear on your music app.

  6. For the most part I agree with the selections. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest publicized events in the world. The big companies are always battling for the best commercial every year. The marketing during the game can almost be a distraction from the game. These commercials influence consumers into being interested in there commercials like the Dodge commercial, it hit home with a lot of people and influenced a lot of people to like Dodge vehicles. Technology has made marketers become more clever and think of ways to persuade and have humor for the consumers. Companies have came up with very many clever ways. I personally think the commercials are becoming a little extreme and aren't as funny as they were in the past. I look forward to seeing how marketers come up with new ways to influence the consumers.

  7. I agree with the selections from the articles. The super bowl already has high ratings every year, the marketing done just adds to it. It also effects consumers as know the non average football will watch the game for the commercials. No I don't crave anything the commercials are pretty cool. Companies now may think if we can make a big splash at the super bowl with a commercial that will be enough to market our product right there. commercials are just more advanced with the things they can do to intrigue the consumers.

  8. I agree with the selections from the articles. The super bowl has to be the most watched televised event all year long. Marketing during this event is smart because there are so many prospective customers watching already. I don't crave anything after viewing the commercials but the commercials are interesting. Commercials are more advanced now a days and the marketers know how to appeal to their audience.
